Does Apple Watch connect to Strava?

Yes, officiallyBoth directions

Yes, two ways. Strava has its own Apple Watch app that records and uploads on its own, and through Apple Health, workouts from Apple's built-in Workout app can upload to Strava automatically too. Strava activities go the other way into Apple Health.

What it costs

Free. Strava's help pages list no subscription requirement for recording with its watch app or for the Apple Health sync. Subscribers get extras on the watch: a live comparison against your PR on Live Segments, a distance countdown, and Beacon live location sharing.

If the official sync is not enough

  • HealthFit. iPhone and Apple Watch companion that automatically exports Apple Health workouts to Strava in the background with full sensor data. One-time $6.99 purchase, no subscription or account required
  • RunGap. iOS app that gathers your workouts from Strava, Garmin, Apple Health and dozens of other services in one place, so you can view, analyze, back up and export your data

How to set it up

  1. To import from Apple's Workout app: in Strava on your iPhone, tap the settings icon on the You tab, then Manage Apps and Devices, then Health, then the plus icon, then Connect.
  2. On Apple's Health Access screen, turn on Workouts & Routes. Allow the other data types you want Strava to read and write.
  3. Back on Strava's Health screen, switch on Automatic Uploads (Workout app to Strava) and Send to Health (Strava to Apple Health). Notifications for new workouts is optional.
  4. To record with Strava's own watch app instead: install it from the Apple Watch app on your iPhone (My Watch, then Strava), stay logged in on the phone, open Strava on the watch and allow Health and Motion & Fitness.
  5. Then let Strava read Heart Rate and Workouts in your iPhone's Health permissions, or heart rate won't record.

What reaches Strava

  • From the Strava watch app: GPS route, time, heart rate from the watch sensor or a paired Bluetooth chest strap, and live elevation on the watch screen for hiking, trail running, cycling and winter sports. It uploads when the phone is in range or the watch has a network connection.
  • From Apple's Workout app: workouts from the past 30 days, automatically or one at a time with Import
  • From Apple's Workout app: cycling power and cadence from sensors paired to the watch (needs iOS 17, watchOS 10 and Strava app version 403 or later)
  • Running power, shown only on the activity page in the mobile app
  • Apple Fitness+ classes, with the class name, trainer, episode number, music genre, and pace and distance where they apply. Class types Strava doesn't have arrive as Workouts.

What comes back from Strava

  • With Send to Health on: route, activity type, distance, time and calories for each Strava activity, into Apple Health
  • Saved Strava routes, which you can follow on the watch from the Strava watch app with off-route alerts
  • Live Segments on the watch for outdoor runs and rides

Limitations and gotchas

  • Only the native Apple Workout app counts. Workouts that other apps write into Apple Health are not imported, which is the gap HealthFit and RunGap fill.
  • The import window is 30 days. Older Workout app sessions can't be pulled in through the integration.
  • Running cadence from Apple Health isn't supported, and running power doesn't appear on the web or count toward Fitness & Freshness or the Power Curve.
  • Routes of activities that reached Strava from another company's app, such as Garmin or Zwift, are not sent on to Apple Health.
  • Strava rejects duplicates. If an import shows as done but the activity is missing, look for one with the same date and time, delete it, and import again.
  • Anything missing at upload (GPS, map, heart rate) can't be added later, and permissions you grant afterwards apply to new activities only.
  • The Strava watch app needs watchOS 10 and iOS 17 or later, and recording without your phone needs a Series 4 or newer. Automatic Fitness+ sync needs iOS 18.2 and watchOS 11.2; on older versions you import by hand.
  • Starting a Strava watch recording while still connected to your phone can cut the start of the route short, a bug Strava attributes to Apple. Start away from the phone if you're leaving it behind. Running another workout app at the same time can also interfere with GPS.
  • On free accounts, Live Segments show an arrow for ahead of or behind your PR, but not by how much. Times on the watch are preliminary until Strava processes the upload.
