What it costs
Activity sync is free. Strava routes and Live Segments on the watch need a Strava subscription. Suunto's partner page says a new watch connected to the Suunto app comes with a 60-day Strava trial.
How to set it up
- In the Suunto app on iOS, go to Profile, then Partner services. On Android it's Settings, then Account, then Partner services. Strava's help page calls the same menu Connect to other services.
- Tap Strava, log in and accept the connection.
- If you linked the accounts before Suunto added routes and segments, disconnect and connect again, or Suunto says they won't transfer correctly.
- Routes: in the Suunto app, open the Map tab, tap the library flag, and switch on Use in watch for each Strava route you want on the wrist.
- Live Segments: tap the watch icon in the Suunto app, open My SuuntoPlus Guides and switch on Strava Segments for run and ride. On the watch, add the Strava segments guide from the sport mode's options before you start.
What reaches Strava
- Each workout after it syncs from the watch to the Suunto app, automatically
- GPS track, heart rate, speed and power, which Strava uses for its zones, analysis and segment matching
- Elevation from the barometer on watches that have one. On watches without one, Strava swaps in elevation from its own basemap.
What comes back from Strava
- Starred Strava routes into the Suunto app's route library, up to 15 on the watch at a time. Unstarring a route on Strava removes it.
- Starred segments as a SuuntoPlus Strava segments guide, one for running and one for cycling, 20 on the 9 Peak Pro and 5 on other compatible watches
Limitations and gotchas
- Suunto-specific metrics stay behind. Suunto says Strava may not support EPOC, SWOLF, stroke count, swim intervals, recovery time or training effect.
- Moving time and pace can look off. Strava splits moving and elapsed time while Suunto shows one duration, and Strava says gaps in a Suunto file's GPS can make moving time too short and pace too fast. Suunto suggests the 1-second GPS setting; Strava's workarounds are Correct Distance or tagging the run as a race.
- No backfill. Older workouts have to be exported one at a time from the Suunto app (FIT, or GPX with only GPS and time) and uploaded on the Strava website, since manual upload isn't in Strava's phone app.
- On the watch, Live Segments don't take over the screen; you switch to the segment view yourself. The alert doesn't say which segment or which way, pressing lap or using auto lap spoils the finish time, and going off course ends the effort.
- While the Strava segments guide is running you can't use a structured workout or another SuuntoPlus app or guide at the same time.
- Routes need a watch with navigation, so not the Suunto 3 or the dive computers.
- The compatible-watch lists are out of step. Strava's Live Segments article names the 9 Peak, 9 Peak Pro, 9 Baro and Vertical and rules out the 5 Peak, 3 and 7. Strava's device list adds the Race series and the Suunto Run. Neither side's Strava pages name the Race 2 or Vertical 2, so check before relying on segments on a new watch.
- Suunto says all Suunto watches work with Strava. Strava's own list for activity sync still names older models (Ambit3, Spartan, Traverse, Suunto 3, 5, 7, 9 and Vertical).
- The two companies don't agree on what syncs back. Strava says routes and segments you created or starred; Suunto says starred only. Star anything you want on the watch to be safe.
