What is Polar Flow?

Polar Flow is the platform every Polar watch and sensor talks to, and its Strava relationship runs in two separate directions that are easy to confuse. Training sessions go one way: once you connect the accounts in Flow's settings, every session you sync from a Polar device also lands on Strava. Nothing about your Strava activities comes back to Flow the other way. What does come back are starred segments and routes — Polar is one of the few non-Garmin brands with real Strava Live Segments on the watch, so a segment you star on Strava can show up on your wrist mid-ride with a live gap to the leader.

That's the integration. The rest of Flow is Polar's own physiology stack, and it's where the company's forty-odd years of heart rate work actually shows up: Training Load Pro splits your load into cardio and muscle, Nightly Recharge reads your autonomic nervous system during the first four hours of sleep, Sleep Plus Stages breaks the night into light, deep and REM. None of it costs anything. Flow comes free with the device and Polar has said publicly it intends to keep delivering features to all product owners at no charge.

Flow exists as two things: the Polar Flow app on iOS and Android, which is where sync happens and where the recovery and sleep detail lives, and flow.polar.com, the web service, which is the better place for long-range reports, season planning, and the Favorites page where Strava segments get pushed to the watch. Polar Electro itself is Finnish, based in Kempele, and has been making wireless heart rate monitors since the late 1970s.

Key Features

One-way session sync to Strava

Connect under Settings → Partners in the Flow web service and authorise on Strava's side. From then on, anything you sync to Flow — via FlowSync, the Flow app, or Polar Beat — also uploads to Strava. Two caveats worth knowing before you connect: sessions already in Flow at the time you link the accounts do not backfill, and manually added sessions never sync at all. A session also needs sample data from GPS, heart rate, altitude, cadence or power to be eligible; calorie data isn't passed across.

Strava Live Segments on the watch

Star a segment on Strava, hit "Update Strava Live Segments" on Flow's Favorites page, pick which ones go to the device, sync. Supported on Grit X through Grit X2 Pro, Pacer and Pacer Pro, Street X, and Vantage V2, V3 and M3. It needs a paid Strava subscription (Polar's support pages still call it the Summit Analysis pack), works for running and cycling only, and won't sync descents — anything with even a slightly negative grade is dropped for safety. The watch holds a maximum of 100 favorites at once.

Training Load Pro

Cardio Load is a TRIMP figure from heart rate, duration and your HR range; Muscle Load is average power times duration in kilojoules, so it only exists for running and cycling with power. Flow then divides your 7-day average load (Strain) by your 28-day average (Tolerance) and buckets the result: below 0.8 is Detraining, 0.8–1.0 Maintaining, 1.0–1.3 Productive, above 1.3 Overreaching. You can also log an RPE by hand as Perceived Load.

Nightly Recharge

Two components measured while you sleep. ANS charge comes from heart rate, heart rate variability and breathing rate over roughly the first four hours of the night, on a −10 to +10 scale where zero is your normal; Sleep charge scores how you slept. Both are read against your own past 28 days rather than a population average.

Sleep Plus Stages

Automatic sleep detection with a light/deep/REM breakdown, cycle count, and a single Sleep Score combining duration and quality. Polar validated the staging algorithm against polysomnography, which is more than most wrist trackers will claim.

Recovery Pro

The serious end, and the one with a hardware requirement: it's built on the Orthostatic Test, which needs a Polar H9 or H10 chest strap — wrist optical won't do it. Two tests inside 28 days gets you cardio recovery feedback; four gets a personalised HRV baseline. Supported on Grit X Pro and X2 family, Street X, and Vantage V, V2, V3 and M3.

FitSpark

Daily ready-made workout suggestions on the watch — 2 to 4 options each day drawn from cardio, strength, and core/mobility, weighted by your recovery, fitness level and recent training. Suggestions refresh after each session, at midnight, and when you wake. Polar says it settles in after about a week of use.

Who It's For

  • Polar watch owners who want their sessions on Strava without exporting FIT files by hand
  • Riders and runners chasing segments who'd rather see the live gap on their wrist than check the leaderboard afterwards
  • Anyone tracking recovery seriously who wants ANS-based overnight measurement and a load model that separates cardio from muscular strain
  • People allergic to subscriptions, since the whole platform ships free with the device and the one paid tier is genuinely optional
