What is Oura?

Oura is a ring, not a training app. It measures you overnight — resting heart rate, heart rate variability, respiratory rate, body temperature — and hands you three numbers in the morning: Sleep, Readiness, and Activity. The Strava connection exists because a ring is bad at capturing a bike ride and good at capturing the night after it.

The integration runs both ways, but not symmetrically. From Strava into Oura you get workouts and heart rate: activities land in the Timeline on the Today tab with timing, duration and pace, and they count toward your Activity Score and your daily activity goal — so a two-hour ride you recorded on a head unit still gives you credit in Oura without the ring having seen it. Oura's own announcement of the partnership put it more broadly, saying Strava workouts are reflected in the daily Readiness and Activity Scores; the current help article only spells out the Activity Score and the goal. Two limits worth knowing before you connect: Oura syncs activities for the current day only, and nothing can be imported retroactively.

Going the other way is much narrower. Only workouts you recorded in the Oura app through its Activity Heart Rate feature get exported to Strava. Activities picked up by Automatic Activity Detection, and anything you added by hand, are not exported at all. Separately you can post Oura Stickers — your Readiness, Sleep or Activity Score on a background image — onto an existing Strava activity from the share icon in the Oura app. On Android, GPS maps don't currently export from Oura to Strava.

If your training already lives in Strava, Oura isn't going to analyse it. There's no FTP, no fitness-and-fatigue chart, no training load. What it adds is the half of the day Strava never sees.

Key Features

Strava activities count in Oura

Imported workouts show up as cards on the Today tab with duration and pace and feed your Activity Score and daily goal. If the same session is recorded twice — say Activity Heart Rate and Strava at once — Oura keeps one copy, using whichever data it judges more reliable.

Oura Stickers on your Strava posts

Pick a background and a graph or metric, and Oura generates an image of your Readiness, Sleep or Activity Score that you can share straight to a Strava activity. It's the recovery equivalent of a ride photo.

What never leaves Oura

Automatic Activity Detection covers over 40 activity types and needs ten minutes of movement and at least 5% ring battery to fire — and none of those sessions export to Strava. Neither do activities you type in manually. If you want an Oura workout on Strava, you have to have started it in the app.

Live Activity Tracking, with a real caveat

Start a workout in the Oura app and you get live pace and distance from your phone's GPS for outdoor activities. Live heart rate is a different story: the ring does not stream heart rate to your screen, so on-screen HR requires a third-party BLE monitor — Oura names Garmin HRM Dual, Polar H10 and Verity Sense, Powerbeats Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3, and says Apple Watch is not supported for this. Without a strap the ring still records heart rate and shows it in the summary afterwards.

Cardio Capacity (VO2 max)

Your first reading is a population estimate from age, sex, height and weight — not a measurement. To improve it, Oura prompts you through a six-minute walking test, and buckets the result as Peak, High, Fair or Low for your age group. Useful as a trend; not a replacement for the VO2 max estimate your bike computer is already guessing at.

Six heart rate zones, not five

Oura uses zones 0 through 5 off an age-based max heart rate estimate. You can override the max HR in the app if you know your real one, which is worth doing before you read anything into the zone breakdown.

Membership gates almost all of it

Without an active membership on a Gen3 or later ring, the app shows your three daily scores, ring battery, basic profile, settings and the Explore content. That's it — no third-party integrations, so no Strava, and no API access either.

Who It's For

  • Cyclists and runners who track everything on Strava and want an overnight recovery read on top of it, without strapping a watch to their wrist at night
  • Anyone who finds a watch unwearable in bed but still wants HRV, resting heart rate and sleep staging to show up next to their training
  • Gen2 ring owners, who can use the Strava integration without paying for a membership at all
  • Not people looking for training analysis — if you want CTL, FTP or a fatigue curve from your Strava data, Oura is the wrong tool and pairs better with one than replaces it
