What is KOM Hunter?

KOM Hunter is a segment finder built on a simple premise: the wind is worth more than you think, and it's free. Their own figure for a flat 5K with the wind behind you is about 35 seconds — which is a lot of training. So rather than help you get faster, it tells you when to turn up. Connect Strava, drop a start location, and it ranks the public segments around you by how much effective tailwind each one will actually have — matching wind speed and direction against each segment's orientation, hour by hour, up to three days out.

The ranking is the product. Most KOM tools list nearby segments, which is a leaderboard with extra steps; this one filters to segments where the wind is genuinely helping and sorts by how winnable they are. A segment doesn't even appear for a given hour unless it has at least 5 km/h of effective tailwind then — below that it's mostly crosswind and not worth planning a ride around.

It's a web app from a Dutch company, free to start with no card, and actively worked on — the changelog runs to within days.

Key Features

Windfall Scores

For riders with a power meter, each segment gets one number combining three things: the forecast at that segment for the hour you picked, the segment's own history (current KOM or QOM time, popularity, how often it changes hands), and your power data pulled from Strava. Scores run from roughly 50 to 200+, in four bands — Strong at 120 and up, Good from 90, Fair from 70, and Low below that, meaning save your legs.

Live tailwind speeds without a power meter

No power meter means no personalised score, because there's nothing to weight the ranking against. You still get live tailwind speeds on every segment, which is the same wind signal minus the personalisation.

A three-day hourly slider

Scrub forward day by day and hour by hour to find the window instead of reacting to whatever the wind is doing right now. Forecasts refresh hourly. Free accounts see the next three hours; the full three-day slider is premium.

Route builder

Pick several high-scoring segments and it chains them into the shortest rideable loop, then hands you a GPX for your head unit. Premium.

Starring that reaches your bike computer

Star a segment in KOM Hunter and it stars on Strava too, so it flows through Strava's own sync to Garmin, Wahoo and other head units. Three a day free, unlimited on premium.

Radar alerts

Set a Windfall threshold for your area and it emails you when conditions cross it.

Achievements

A scoreboard of the KOMs and QOMs you hold, the ones you've lost in the last 90 days, and milestones along the way, with a manual sync if you don't want to wait for the background refresh.

Who It's For

  • Segment hunters who want to spend their good legs on the attempts that are actually winnable today
  • Riders with a power meter, who get the personalised half of the product — everyone else gets the wind half
  • Anyone bored of intervals who'd rather have a reason to go explore a road they've never ridden
  • Runners too — ride and run segments are both supported and filterable, though wind does more for a cyclist
