What is Wahoo?
Wahoo is a fitness technology company founded in 2009 by Chip Hawkins in Atlanta, Georgia. It started with an ANT+ dongle that let an iPhone read a heart rate strap, and now makes GPS bike computers, smart trainers and smart bikes, heart rate straps, and the SYSTM training app.
The Strava connection runs in both directions and you set it up once: activities upload on their own, and routes you save in Strava come back down to the head unit. Finish a ride on an ELEMNT and it lands in Strava while you're still unclipping.
Hardware Products
ELEMNT Bike Computers
The ELEMNT series is three computers: the ACE ($499.99), the ROAM 3 ($464.99), and the smaller BOLT 3 ($349.99). All of them upload activities to Strava on their own and pull down your saved Strava routes. You authorize Strava once during setup, and it syncs over WiFi or Bluetooth after that.
KICKR Smart Trainers
The KICKR lineup starts at the KICKR CORE 2 ($549.99), runs through the KICKR itself ($849.99), and tops out at the KICKR BIKE PRO ($3,999.99), a full smart bike. Indoor rides upload to Strava through the Wahoo app. The old KICKR SNAP has been discontinued. Wahoo still supports it, but no longer sells it.
Heart Rate Monitors
The TICKR series connects via Bluetooth and ANT+ to record heart rate data that gets included in your Strava activities.
Wahoo SYSTM
SYSTM is Wahoo's indoor training platform, built from their acquisition of The Sufferfest. It offers structured workouts set to pro cycling race footage, plus yoga, strength, and mental training. It sits behind the top subscription tier, Pro, and is the main reason to pay for one; the cheaper Core tier does not include it.
SYSTM uses the proprietary 4DP (Four-Dimensional Power) testing protocol to assess your fitness across different power durations, then tailors workouts to your specific strengths and weaknesses.
Workouts completed in SYSTM sync out to third-party apps once you authorize them under Settings (Strava, TrainingPeaks, Garmin Connect, Final Surge and Today's Plan), or you can have the raw .FIT file emailed to you.
Strava Integration Features
Automatic Activity Sync
Activities recorded on ELEMNT computers or in the Wahoo app upload automatically to Strava. Enable this during device setup or later in the app's Connected Apps settings.
Route Sync
Create routes in Strava and they'll wirelessly download to your ELEMNT. The ELEMNT ACE, BOLT 3, and ROAM 3 automatically generate turn-by-turn navigation for synced routes.
Live Segments
With a paid Strava subscription, your starred segments sync to ELEMNT computers. The device alerts you when you're approaching one and shows live progress against your PR or the KOM/QOM.

How It Compares
Wahoo competes primarily with Garmin in the bike computer and trainer space. The main differences:
- Wahoo's setup and Strava sync tend to be simpler and more reliable
- Garmin offers a broader product ecosystem (watches, running dynamics, golf, etc.)
- SYSTM competes with Zwift and TrainerRoad for indoor training, emphasizing video content over virtual worlds
Is Wahoo free to use with Strava?
Yes for the part most people need. The free Base tier of the Wahoo app records workouts and does the full two-way Strava sync for activities and routes. Above that, Core is $4.99 a month or $49.99 a year and adds training load and trend analysis; Pro is $17.99 a month or $179.99 a year and is the only tier that includes SYSTM. Everyone gets 14 days of full Pro access to start with, whichever tier you sign up for.
Do I need Wahoo hardware to use SYSTM?
No. SYSTM works with any smart trainer, power meter, or heart rate monitor that connects via Bluetooth or ANT+. Wahoo hardware isn't required, though the integration is tighter.
How do Strava Live Segments work on Wahoo?
Star segments in Strava, and they sync to your ELEMNT computer. During rides you get an alert as you approach one, then live progress against your PR or the leaderboard. This needs a paid Strava subscription. It isn't part of free Strava.
Can I sync Strava routes to my ELEMNT?
Yes. Connect your Strava account in the Wahoo app, and your saved Strava routes will automatically sync to your ELEMNT over WiFi. The newer ELEMNT models (ACE, BOLT 3, ROAM 3) generate turn-by-turn directions automatically.
